There is a piece of music I am trying to find, it is very dramatic and you hear it on TV and I think it was once the start of a current affairs programme in the 1960s, it starts with one note of violins and the same note is rhythmically played over and over almost sounding like morse code or something ... help !! It is a famous composer but I just can't find it and don't know what it is called.

Is the music to Inspector Morse. I think the composer was Barrington Phelong (or something like that)
Could it be this?

It is a classical piece, I feel it might be Russian. Had forgotten some of these great openings though. Maybe it wasn't a current affairs programme. I am not being much help. I am searching on You Tube, if I find it you will be the first to know! Thanks again for all the effort I didn't realise this was such a live place still. I used to post about ten years ago and had about 3000 answers but I can't remember what my name was !
It's been mentioned, but not linked to - the theme from Inspector Morse ...

Had forgotten about that one ... they are all great contenders, but the piece I am speaking about is just a monotonous chord quite fast like quaver length ... but again appreciate all the suggestions and enjoying the clips.
how about this? not exactly haunting or ominous, not russian either but plenty of dum dum in it

I've convinced myself this is it!! I didnt know what it was called or who wrote it, but now I do, so I've learned something today. Let it play for a while until it gets to the famous bit. Fingers crossed!
