Fao Builder ; Manhole Cover Help Please
6 Answers
Hi Builder, or any other kind soul, I need to replace my manhole cover but can only find manhole covers that are 600mm X 450mm. The manhole cover that I need to replace is 635mm X 480mm (or roughly that size, but definitely not as small as 600mm X 450mm. Where can I get the right sized one from? Thanks

It's not a big job. I've heard of some who simply had a piece of 8 or 10mm flat steel sheet cut as a replacement. It would have to be painted or galvanised though.
Good idea from Heath. You can usually find anything on Ebay.

I had this problem when a manhole cover (that gets driven over) cracked. My water company came and replaced it (with a new frame) at no cost...because, even though on my property, the cover - along with the chamber - belongs to them. That's because it's part of a shared drainage system, now "owned" by the water company.
Thank you Gingejbee for saving me money. The manhole cover WAS the responsibility of the water company, you were right, and they came and replaced it this morning. They had to reduce the size of the opening and concrete it in, and put a new metric sized manhole cover on. I imagine it would've cost me quite a bit to get it done privately if I'd had to. I would never have thought it was the water company's responsibility, so thanks again. :-)
