Fun Boy Three did a version in 1983 (got to no 7).Terry Hall of FB3(and more famously "The Specials"),wrote the song with Jane Wiedlen of The Go Go's.Don't know if it's the same version you heard.

A band called the "Hippos" covered it on a compilation album called "Before you were Punk Vol 2"
