There was a thread last week about how the younger ones of today don't know the names of the groups/bands etc that us older ones grew up with, and I said this makes me feel very old when that happens. This morning listening to the 9o'clock news on the radio, the obviously young girl was reporting on the death of Acker Bilk who she pronounced as Acre Bilk!!! Oh dear.
Happened quite a lot over this week end
I didnt notice - ay-ker
I just thought it was ignorance or laziness. English is one of the languages which you cant just pick up text and read it out aloud - you have to prepare it
I find it strange when people say "never heard of him/her" or "before my time".. Henry V111, The Battle of Hastings, The Crimean War etc were all before my time but I've still heard of them.
When my cousin first got married, she and her husband lived next door to Acker Bilk. That's my claim to fame folks.!
I listen to a lot of Jazz and blues so I've heard him, but lots of folks I haven't heard of ( mainly 50's and poppy 60's and 70's one hit wonders) but everything is an education and they could have got his name right.
