But have an ongoing dispute with them over an upgrade and my bill is bigger than they promised me. This is the second time Vodaphone have stitched me up and I have ended up paying more than I believe I would be. We are at stalemate as I keep phoning and complaining, they say they will check recording of my original call and get back to me. No-one does. I am now seriously considering going over to Talk Talk who I have my landline/broadband with - will I be able to take my mobile number even if I am still in dispute with Vodaphone?
Talk Talk will need a code from Vodaphone, it might be called a PUK code, not too sure. But they will definitely need Vodaphone to release a code for the number to carry over. Did this last year for my mum, from T-Mobile to Virgin, all switched over within an hour! You might not be so lucky, seeing as you're in a dispute.
It's called a Porting Authorisation Code or PAC. A PUK is something different.
But you are likely to still be liable for your outstanding contractual charges from Vodafone, so you can't just walk away from the liability even if you change supplier.
There will be ways of escalating a dispute rather than just running customer services so you should invoke that. I'd be putting things in writing by now so you have a copy. Try emailing them with your complaint.
Upgrading a contract terms and conditions, including the monthly price, purely on the basis of a phone call, with no other audit trail sounds dodgy to me. Are you sure they didn't write to you confirming the details of the upgrade including the new price?
Never had anything in writing, the promised me all sorts of discounts and a free tablet (which they then tried to charge me for). I kept stressing I only wanted to reduce my bill from what I was paying previously and we eventually (so I thought) agreed a monthly payment of around £35 for the phone and the tablet package. When the first bill came in it was £82 (no call charges etc) and the next two have been almost £60. I have now stopped my direct debit. They kept promising to check my call and get back to me and even yesterday they did not call back when promised. I now can't use the phone as they have blocked it. I want to change suppliers and then battle it out with vodaphone re the outstanding amount. I realise I will have to pay them but I am not paying what I did not agree to.
