Stuff that was flammmable used to be called inflammable presumably because it could become 'inflamed'. This led to some confusion as some people thought it meant not flammable as in 'infertile' or 'insensitive'. Somewhere in the 60s stuff that could catch fire became 'flammable' and stuff that couldn't catch fire became 'non flammable'. Some old dinosaurs who hadn't been on a fire fighting course remained confused.
