I thought it was fantastic and truly uplifting. Thanks Chris et al, for taking me out of the doldrums.
Wonderful tribute to Viola Beach.

It was a good performance, but I felt a bit uneasy watching CM practically eating the mic...
Question Author
Yes, he does that, NoM.
I watched Adele on Saturday and Coldplay last night. Both were excellent performances but, as i watched CM and co, a thought struck me. How come Coldplay are widely criticised for their melancholic tunes, yet Adele (no less melancholic) is (apparently) beyond criticism?
Question Author
I haven't seen any criticism of either of them, but then again, I don't read the music press.

I just like the music.
I watched Jeff Lynne's ELO earlier and they were great. Wasn't a big fan back in the day.
I don't rate Coldplay, all a bit samey to me, but what do I know!!
Adele ok. Jeff Lynne and Coldplay brilliant.

You probably know as much as I do, Saintpeter, but we do know what we like.
Each to their own. :-)

There are bands that some people simply can't connect with - and Coldplay are one of mine.

As a music journalist I can objectively see their massive appeal, but on a personal level, I can't do with Chris Martin.

He's like a sixth-former at the end of term dance who has been told he can have a go at singing his adolescent lyrics in his wavery not-quite-grown-up voice, and jig about a bit self-consciously.

What detracts from that image is what an amazing band Coldplay are, but the sound and image is him, and I can't do with him at all.

I know Michel Eavis was a fan from day one, loyalty they repay with shows like last night's, but it doesn't reach me in the slightest.

Never mind -maybe they'll get Bruce back to show everyone how festivals are closed properly!
I don't think Bruce Forsythe is well enough, Andy.
Ah- you meant Born in the USA Bruce.
I'm surprised Slade haven't been asked to do the legends section
I thought it was great. They always get the crowd going and singing along, which is what they want.
Contrast that with ELO where there seemed to be almost no atmosphere - although the music was good.
fiction-factory - //I'm surprised Slade haven't been asked to do the legends section //

Slade are in that unenviable position of taking two members out with two 'others' under the Slade banner.

The two who made the band, Messrs Lea and Holder have far better things to do with their time, and don't need the money, so rather than indulgence with a poor copy, best to leave the legend alone.

I like Chris Martin, I like his voice and I like his lyrics. From last night, I also like his magnanimity as shown in the tribute to Viola Beach.

It's a shame that the crowd didn't join in with My Way. Maybe they should have put the words on the screen.
Enjoyed listening but feared his comfort blanket

He needed that to wipe away the perspiration, Tambo. No wonder he left it on the stage at the end.
Coldplay and a bee gee, that was fun.
A lesson from the king -use a scarf

It was Randy........Oh, oh, oh, oh, stayin' alive.
Many years ago on an episode of Tomorrow's World, I saw Michael Rodd demonstrate a piece of equipment which we would 'all have in our homes'.
It was a digital music-player which allowed the listener to take out the vocal track(s).......that's how I'd like to listen to Coldplay.

I hear a brilliant bit of music and then find out it's by Coldplay and is going to have Chris Martin squeaking all over it at some point. :o(
Question Author
Oh, nooooooo!

Actually, JTH, I would like to do that with Radiohead. I do not like his voice at all.

Funny how some voices appeal and others really grate.
