Let's talk about Jazz

What was the piece of music you heard that first attracted you to Jazz?

For me it has to be 'Unsquare Dance' by Dave Brubeck. Probably because the time signature is in 7/4. It's a lively, catchy tune with an odd rhythm. A very talented man!  :o)

I have to say I've never heard anything that's attracted me to jazz - I'm not decrying it at all, I simply don;t have that gene - I file it under opera and most classical - probably fabulous, but it doesn't reach me.

 Maybe not true trad jazz but benny goodman's St Louis Blues was the first I can recall that got me into non-vocal music

mine was not about hearing a set piece of music it was being dragged along to hear a set that a friend of a friend had been performing in.  The sound was incredible!  The saxophinist was truley the best ive ever heard and the guy on drums was amazing as it was so softly done, not over powering at all.  Infact at one point he was running his drum stick along a radiator and i just couldnt belive how well that sound worked with what else was going on!  I am truley a jazz convert

I love the fact that there is such variety in Jazz. Most people probably like some form of jazz without even realising that it would come under that category of music. Seeing it live is always incredible because it contains so much improvisation. It's mind blowing!

i suppose if i were to name someone it would be Django Rhinehart, his rhythm guitar is just outstanding!

I can't say I'm Really into jazz, but the first jazz song I ever heard (aged about four!) was Take Five by Dave Brubeck (my Dad had it on a Dave Brubeck album) and I've always loved it since that day!!

Afraid I can't stand what is called 'Modern Jazz', Trad and New Orleans is what Jazz is all about, try listening to 'Kid Ory', you'll be hooked.

I didn't have a specific track that introduced me to jazz, as I'm quite young I was pushed into the pop music culture and then I slowly developed into the sounds of the 60's and 70's, the whole era of rock and roll - even though I wasn't there I can somehow get that feeling of passionate nostalgia from songs such as "Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense And Peppermints" or "Rolling Stones - Paint It Black". And my tastes got even more like that. I have always been creative and sort of fluently artistic, not good at art - merely passionate with an artistic mind. Now, I never listen to radio because I just can't stand the dying noise but I was setting my cd alarm for the morning and I accidentally switched it on to the radio and it went on to Smooth Fm for some reason (102.2fm) and it was the sweetest, smoothest sound I'd ever heard. Just a nice slow chord from a saxophone and I was hooked. I never found out the name but it isn't specifics I enjoy in jazz, it is merely the music itself. I'm trying to find a jazz club nearby that I can visit but my searches have proven futile so far.
