I doubt he was chewing gum as he wouldn`t have been able to sing with it in his mouth (unless he swallowed it which is unlikely) Some singers sniff a Vicks inhaler before singing because it clears the airways. Maybe he was chewing some sort of nasal clearing sweet

I didn't watch it, some people chew gum to keep their mouth moist, if you are a singer, you get a dry mouth and throat. Did he chew with his mouth open? Get the cellotape out and put his pictures back together, put it to the back of your mind.
