OpenOffice is actually far easier to use, in terms of inserting images, than Microsoft Word is. (Getting the positioning right, relative to the text is far more straightforward). So you shouldn't need any other word procesor.
However, as Murdo has indicated, LibreOffice is one of the two major rivals to OpenOffice, WPS Office being the other:

If you want maximum flexibility using images with text though, you shouldn't be using a word procesor anyway. It's a desktop publishing program that you need. PagePlus Starter Edition is excellent:
