Hey all. Just bought an mp3 player and am looking for suggestions for the best tunes EVER in the following categories: Dance, Funk-soul-blues, Sleepy (Gorgeous slow songs - no cheese), Feel-good and one that doesn't fit in to the other categories.

Let me know your favourite songs please - one from each group. Cheers! Happy thinking! x

Thanks Ermintrude, that's the sort of thing I was talking about!

(Already got Lullaby by the Cure on there - lovely!) xxx

Sleepy?  Doves are the masters there.  I'd suggest Firesuite (in fact most of Lost Souls), also Shadows of Salford and Ambition from Some Cities.

Feel good:  Doves again, with Pounding!  Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums, New Radicals - You Get What You Give, Snow Patrol - Spitting Games, Oasis - Stay Young.

I could go on and on!

Dance: Prodigy - No Good (Start the Dance)

Funk-Soul-Blues: Sly and the Family Stone - Family Affair

Sleepy: Coldplay - The Scientist or Radiohead - Pyramid Song

Feel good: Undertones - Teenage Kicks

Other: umm, how about something completely different. Boards of Canada - Roygbiv

Best sleep song ever:

Garbage - "Afterglow".

I know the idea of Garbage doesn't exactly inspire sleep, but this is a real gem.

Glad you asked...

Dance: Rec Rangers - Toot toot hey beep beep (xpress2 mix)
Funk/soul: The Meters - Handclapping Song
Sleepy: Lemon Jelly - Soft
Feelgood: Irain Jaya - Chili Con Carne
Other: M.I.A. - Galang

Seeya!

Dance - Born Slippy Underworld

Soul/Blues - Mr Big Stuff Jean Knight

Sleepy - Emily Stephen Fretwell

Feelgood - Turn up the Sun Oasis

Other - Climbing the Walls Backstreet Boys

..just thought of another sleeply one for you lissyl78.. you might already have it though.. A Forest (originally by the cure) - by Nouvelle Vague..it's so dreamy...

Dance: Clubbed To Death, by Rob Duggan

Soul/Blues: I Can't Write Left Handed, by Bill Withers

Sleepy: Gorecki, by Lamb/ The Shining, by Badley Drawn Boy

Feelgood: Weather With You, by Crowded House

Other: Loser, by Beck.

All the above posts have some great tracks too.

lissyl78, if you love The Meters Handclapping Song, I reckon you'd really like 'Saturday Night Fish Fry'. It's on Soul Jazz records, available on CD and is just THE BEST introduction to New Orleans funk and soul you can buy. Then file it under dance/funk/soul/feelgood...;)
