In the general scale of instruments how hard is the guitar to learn to play compared to others like piano, recorder etc. I'm about to start learning but I feel like I need bigger hands and longer fingers (maybe I do)

I don't think there is a reelative scale of difficulty - it depends entirely on the apptitude of the player.

That said, keyboards do have notes set out, which will sound the same struck by a novice or an expert, wheras a guitar sound does vary because of the 'action' of the individual instrument - the distance between the strings and the fretboard - and the technique used to play.

You will find that your difficulty in reaching some notes will ease with practice - small hands are ararely a deterent to learning the guitar.

I play a bit of both and I'd say the piano is about 5 times harder to learn than the guitar. Plus you really have to learn to read music to play the piano to a decent standard, whereas you can become proficient on the guitar playing by ear, once you've learnt the basic chord structures.

I started playing the guitar in August and once you get used to the chords it is really quite easy.  Bought myself a new guitar yesterday and can't wait to get home before kids come in..... fingers not looking good though but that is the price we pay!
