Quincy Jones is a musical genius in my view, and I'm pleased he's said something that I've always felt.

I wasn't around when the Beatles were releasing songs, but having heard many of them over the years I've always though that, at best, they were average.

As a side note, and completely irrelevant to the thread, I have an enormous crush on Quincy Jones's daughter, Rashida Jones.

Groups don't have to be great musicians to put out popular music, and being great musicians doesn't mean your music will be popular.

I was never a huge Beatles fan, but their output, in such a short space of time, is up there with the best.

Pop music does not exist without context.

At the beginning, The Beatles were not great musicians, but that's simply because no pop musicians were - they were all starting out together, and learning their new sounds and expressions together.

There is no doubt that all The Beatles had large amounts of raw talent, which developed as their careers progressed.

In terms of the Ringo joke - John Lennon knew full well that his friend would appreciate his sarky Scouse humour, secure in the knowledge that he was, and is, a superlative drummer, so no harm done.

Anyone who thinks Ringo is not a good drummer doesn't know what actually makes a good drummer.

I have interviewed hundreds of top-level pro drummers, and when Ringo's name is mentioned, it is always with deep respect for his ability and influence.

Yes, Andy. If you weren't there when 'Love Me Do' suddenly hit the airwaves, you won't understand the influence of The Beatles. So fresh and vibrant. If you were born any later than 1958 then you grew up with the movements in music that they inspired and, yes, their songs will seem average and pleasant. Without the Beatles, Queen etc. as we know them, would not have existed in the form we know.

I'm no music pundit, but I was there and that sound was electrifying after the 50'smusic I heard as I grew up.

I saw them perform twice, they were very good onstage as well.

My favourite intro of all time is to I Saw Her Standing There -

McCartney goes "One two three FOUR!" and you know you are about to hear just under two minutes of the most incendiary rock and roll genius ever committed to vinyl - and then you do.

If you were a teenager in 1965, as I was, they were revolutionary. So different from the music of our elder siblings. And of course, they were ENGLISH! We yanks were captivated!

I don't think this has anything to do with jealously on the part of Quincy Jones.....he has no need, whatsoever, too feel jealous of anybody ! And it has nothing to do with money.

The reason that The Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ were that they struck a cord with the youth of the day.

Any comparisons, with any body else are simply unneeded and unnecessary.

Anyone would think Quincy had butchered a baby kitten live on TV rather than given his opinion on some pop musicians he met during his 60+ years in the business.

Nice it's brought some favourite tunes to the fore for fans all the same.

I was a teenager in 1965 and I would struggle to pick my top five records from this list, but I do know there wouldn't be a Beatles track in it.
