I don't particularly like the guy but did elvis, beatles, dylan, redding, gaye, cooke ever fill a field with 400,000 screaming fans (Knebworth)???? I see that as pretty legendary.
That was my point. May not be a legend now but will we look pack in 20 years time and think.....yes he is?
just because you play to x and y amount of people don't make you legendary..emerson lake and palmer played to vast arenas in the 70s nobody can claim they are legendary...the likes of the beatles, sinatra and elvis were considered legendary while they were still performing..ditto the stones, the who and aretha franklin ....as much as i will give williams his due and say that he's a good entertainer..i can't somehow bring myself to imagine people discussing him as legendary many years from now..
the earlier artists were all pioneers of one sort of music or another and pushed the limits of what had been possible before. this is what makes them legendary.
robbie has not does this in the past and will not be allowed to now he is a music industry product. therefore not a legend.
having said this, i like the music he makes (generally) and wouldn't mind seeing his live act.
He has made some memorable tunes (I admit in liking Trippin - very infectious) but generally his flamboyance, silliness and so called "charisma" has only made him increasingly overrated.
Incidently, I heard a couple of songs by Mark Owen - his actually ok despite recent poor single/ablum sales. Not at all legend material but he's worth a listen.
