The uproar over the children in cages in the USA sprang from nowhere over the past few days, due to one journalist releasing a video of a crying child. How long has this practice been going on? Why did it suddenly emerge now?
Because Trump was basically working within and enacting current law and past presidents had ignored the law.
Crossing the border illegally will get you arrested. Therefore any children with you need to be cared for by a third party.
Other presidents didn’t like the way they would look if they actually did it so let anyone with children into the country simply because they had children with them. Ergo the amount of children trafficked into the US by illegal migrants went up zillions (slight exaggeration but you get the idea) so that they could stay.
It should be noted that legal migrants didnt get to stay with their children and US citizens when arrested didn’t get to stay with their children. So illegal migrants were afforded more rights than legal migrants and US citizens.
He has now backed down, partly because of the bad publicity and probably in part because he has just left the Human rights group and doesn’t want bad press on top of that.
And there was no law anyone tying Trump’s hands anyway.
You have to hand it to the man, he united both democrat and republican parties - in opposition to this obscenity
Then the law should have been changed. Not ignored.
However ignoring the law meant that it encouraged child trafficking. But what the hell. A toss up between allowing trafficking and the publics sensibilities at having to watch it.
So the outcome is... allow trafficking so I don’t have to see the mess.
What are you on about Ich? Children in US cannot be incarcerated with their parents - no matter who you are. Trump didnt make that law, in fact now he has changed it, at least for illegal immigrants.
He may find that backfires if not carried across to US citizens.
Gromit ///Trump had zero tolerance on border immigration as a policy in his election campaign.
Early after being elected the new policy was enacted.
So this has been happening for over a year.///
Absolute nonsense. It's been happening for years. Certainly during the Obama era. (who deported more illegal immigrants than Trump at this stage of his Presidency)
Oh come on ymb try harder :-)
Are you seriously suggesting Trump had to separate these children and bang them up just because ‘children cannot be incarcerated with their parents’
He was as I say constrained by no such law. He did not have to do what he did. Quite simply. And he has realised the folly of his actions belatedly. This is simply the consequence of a knee jerk border mentality - at least some good has come of it - for now
The children are separated from their "parents" if (a) the familial relationship can't be proved, or (b) the customs officer has reasonable suspicion that the child is not a son or daughter of the adult visitor/immigrant.
This is not a new-fangled Trump law.
And nobody is forcing the parent to be separated from their child. All they have to do is turn round and go back to where they came from.
Not that a regard for facts is much concern to posters drunk on a cocktail of Trump hatred and mawkishness.
To quote the wise man: just another normal day on AB.
It was not a new law but it was a new policy as per the attached directive. They knew what they were doing. Some say it was an effort to force the democrats to support the wall building. I don’t really understand that - but then I’ve been at a loss to understand the Trump mentality for some time
