a quarter no is a quarter of a whole note , ok so how LONG is a whole note

A note value does not stand for any absolute duration, but can only be understood in relation to other note values and the time signature.

It depends on the speed of the piece!!


At the start of a piece of music there is a sign- a crotchet (quarter note) = and then a number (60 or 100 0r 72). This is related to the metronome. On the metronome you can set it to any of these numbers and it will give you the "click"- speed. That then gives you the speed of the crotchets, and therefore the speed of the piece!

if the tempo of the song was 60BPM (beats per minute) then a whole note would be 1 second, if it was 120 BPM then it would be half a second and so on
