Can you think of any seasonal/festive songs which could be sung all year round, but are also a bit Christmassy?! Such as Stay Now - East 17, which is supposedly a Christmas song but the only thing that makes it Christmassy is the bells in the background! Also Keeping the Dream Alive by Freiheit- always on the compilations but no mention of Christmas. There must be others?!

Power of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
stop the cavalry, zero to do with christmas
woofgang - I was about to post 'Stop The Cavalry' which simply has the line "Wish I was at home for Christmas …" that has somehow parlayed into a 'Christmas' song.
I think its a very sad song.
Fairytale of New York isn't really about Christmas.
Tilly - // Fairytale of New York isn't really about Christmas. //

Again the line " … and the bells were ringing out on Christmas Day …" seems to equip the rather dreadful ditty as a 'Christmas song.
I can't surely be the only person who loves The Pogues and loves Kirsty McColl and loves 'A Fairytale of New York' but could happily live the rest of my life never hearing that bloody song again!
Jim - I adore Kirsty McColl, a writer of incredible wit and imagination, but I have always found the execrable Shane McGowan to be a living example of The Emperor's New Clothes - a musician whose limited talent is lauded into something it clearly does not deserve - a position usually occupied in perpetuity by Morrissey.
rage against the machine
I disagree completely. Anyone who can write "A Rainy Night in Soho", "The Old Main Drag", "Fiesta" and "The Broad Majestic Shannon" can do no wrong in my book.
Super Trooper by ABBA.
"fairytale of new York" had a convoluted gestation not helped by Stiff records going into fiscal meltdown, the band falling out with elvis Costello and the departure of cait o'riordan.

here's an earlier version of the song, before Steve Lillywhite worked his magic, and introduced the band to his wife....

I always preferred that version.

Absolutely no problem.

To me, one of the greatest pleasures of music, apart from the sound of it, is discussing its appeal or the lack of it with other music fans.

Stuart Maconie is a man who has probably forgotten more about poplar music than I will ever know, and someone who has caused me think seriously about giving up music journalism when I realise that the skills he possesses are never ever going to be mine.

But I remain utterly defeated about his devotion to Blur, a bunch of whiney-voiced pop chancers, and he is equally baffled by my admiration for Queen, one of the finest bands ever to put song to tape, whom he considers overblown popinjays

It's all good fun!
I really like both Blur and Queen. Stuart Maconie's opinion on anything, however, is of total indifference to me.
Off the top of my head, I think that there are only 5 or 6 Christmas number ones that have the word Christmas in the title!
There are dozens of them that can be played all year round, including the 4 by the Beatles, 3 by Spice Girls also Elvis, Queen, Benny Hill, Mr Blobby etc.
