It's well-known, of course, that the only talented women are ugly bints.
I've enjoyed the pick and mix selection I've watched - loved The Killers last night ans was pleasantly surprised by the very young Billie Eilish today.
I enjoyed The Killers with Johnny Marr last night.
Having been to Glastonbury twice, I’m not sure if I wish I was there now or glad I’m not. Mixed bag of experiences.
Good to watch it on tv, anyway.
the shhh

Andy Hughes, most female solo artists are lookers, their looks initially prioritised over talent because it makes them easily marketable. What they lack in ability and vocals gets worked on, not just by coaches but more by technology (making their recording sound better), carefully chosen songs, and making the most of their sex appeal in clothing, choreography, performance, videos etc. If Kylie was an ordinary looking chubster, she’d never have become a successful actress let alone pop star given the very limited talent and voice she has

Let me just think of ten successful female artists who have made it on their looks rather than their talent -

Janice Joplin

Patti Smith

Celine Dion

Nina Simone

Bonie Rait

Tracy Chapman

Cass Elliot

KD Lang

Chrissie Hynde

Polly Harvey

Ten women who you always think of as having enjoyed successful careers, only because they were pop pin-ups whose vocals were produced into something approaching talent.

I can list you ten more who are more sexy and photogenic than Kylie on a bad day, who have also made huge success as singers first and 'pin ups' last, and in most cases, not at all.

Andy, I can’t work out if you’re saying those ten women made their music and singing careers because they were good-looking or good singers, or both.
I think he's saying that they're very talented, but not particularly known for their looks.
Cloverjo - I am saying that all these women are successful musicians, not because a producer tweaked their vocals into the same post code as the tune on their records, but because they are talented writers singers and musicians, none of whom have relied on their looks to create or advance their careers.
Come on Andy, lower case for k.d.! ;-)
Thanks Andy. I only asked because I think Chrissie Hynde is stunningly beautiful and a great singer.
....although when Madonna first met k d lang she's reported to have said: 'Elvis is alive....and she's beautiful!'
Andy Hughes, of course there are exceptions to the rule (you forgot Adele), but the vast majority of female solo artists were or are lookers....and if you care to compile that list it’ll be extremely long
Adele has always had a beautiful face as well as a great voice.
She has now slimmed.

I feel a bit uncomfortable writing that.

The point I am making is that looks only go part of the way in terms of making a singer a success.

Unless the average fan is busy gazing at the cover of the album they are playing - and there is less chance of that than ever with the advent of streaming - then it is more than the artist's physical attraction that has made the listener invest in their work.

Looks don't hurt a career, but trust me - they don't make it either.
Andy Hughes, the likes of Kylie wouldn’t have got as far as being asked to make a record were she not very attractive physically. She never had a great singing voice or ability. First and foremost she was, and still is, very pretty with a cute figure. Her debut hit I Should Be So Lucky became massive largely cos she looked great in the video and posters, when performing it on telly etc.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one.

The audience for Kylie's music during her SAW period was not young lads who fancied her, it was young girls who wanted to be her!

You can only get so far with a cute video - to get people to shell out for your music, you need an appeal that is beyond looks - trust me, have spoken to Pete Waterman about it, and he would know, better than either of us!
For goodness sake: It's a bit of fun. Enjoy.
I used to be obsessed with Kylie when I was 13 or so. I thought she was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

These days, whilst she's undeniably still an incredibly beautiful woman, she's become an exhibitionist and no her voice is not great so I find her a bit nauseating to watch.

I guess our tastes change when we get older.
Andy Hughes - “the audience for Kylie’s music during her SAW period was not young lads who fancied her, it was young girls who wanted to be her!”

What a load of bollards. How would you know, for starters? Did you check who bought her records, watched her videos, etc? My three younger brothers and their mates all fancied the pants off KM so listened to her, watched her, ogled her, lord knows what else, but never rated her as a singer. I’m sure they were far from the only ones. If your mate Pete Waterman thinks Kylie’s records and concert tickets only sold to people who liked her voice, he is deluded and plain wrong

Because I am a professional music journalist, it's my job to know these things, and I have daughters as well.

Like I said, we can agree to differ, it's not worth getting het up about.
Damned with faint praise,
