With everything that is going on in the world with BLM and equality at the minute, is it not time the MOBO's & BET music awards were scrapped?

Can you imagine the uproar if there was a MOWO or WET awards

Jesus wept. "Music of Black Origin" refers to the genres of music dealt with by the awards (R&B, Soul, Hip Hop, Reggae etc) not to the skin colour of the award winners.

Non ethnic acts have often won awards at the shows: Jamiroquai, Eminem, Adele, Amy Winehouse, All Saints, Professor Green, Sam Smith, to name but a few.

So have another go. Have a think about it, and see if you can't think of something else to pretend to be offended by. Maybe you can be triggered by Black Magic or The Dark Crystal next time.

Mozz71, although you may be right, I do believe that when George Michael won in 1989, there was some "raised eyebrows" to say the least, because a white artist won an award that had been created for black artists.

Then over 30 years ago the eyebrow raisers had it wrong, it is primarily as Mozz says about what is perceived to be the origin of the music and not the performer.

There are critics (better informed than I am) who think that line has got blurred over the years and maybe they are right with that - some music takes from many different origins, a fusion if you like.

Awards like this can never be pure but should simplt be seen as a celebration of all that is wonderful in music.

I'm not sure where you gor that from. I'm not sure George has ever won a MOBO, but more importantly, the first MOBO awards were presented in 1996, so you're getting your awards mixed up.

On the whole, that's spot on. Maybe Country and Western is the notable exception, although it certainly picked up traits from Gospel, Blues and Folk, it's origins aren't African, more Irish.

I'm sure you would agree that if gospel and blues are roots of country music, which they are, then that makes country a music of black origin.

I would entirely agree that the Celtic influence is deeply rooted in there, but as always, music is a melting pot, and it's impossible to say with any clear timelines, what started when and from where.

I would agree that if I agreed, but I don't see Blues and Gospel as the roots of Country, more influences in it's evolution. Still, I'm not going to split hairs about this one, like you said to Theland, this is home turf for me as well.
