Mary banks payne was her maiden name. She married Arthur frederick hogben January 1925 in Blean Kent.

Have tried ancestry sites cannot find much information on Mary banks payne but can on Arthur frederick hogben.

1939 they were living at 13 Gordon Square, Margate, Margate M.B., Kent, England. He was a gardener, born 10 December 1896. There seem to have been two other people living with them but not named, probably because they're still alive (your parent or aunt/uncle?)

She appears in the 1901 census with her surname recorded as 'Paine'. Can someone with an active subscription to FindMyPast get the details of the other household residents? I can't find any mention of her in the 1911 census.

I've got the following from FamilySearch.org:

In the 1901 census the household consisted of head Edgar Jones (age 23), wife Kate Jones (age 22), daughter Edith Jones (age 1), niece Mary Paine (age 1) and brother Charles Jones (age 13)

At the 1911 census Edgar Jones's household is recorded as himself (age 33), wife Kate (age 33), daughters Edith (age 12), Dora (age 9), Edna (age 4), son Edgar (age 2), and nieces Mary Jones (age 11), Violet Jones (age 4). The recording of Mary's surname as 'Jones' explains why I couldn't find her before.

at a guess, then - born out of wedlock (maybe Banks was the father's name), taken in by family members and eventually adopted. You could apply for birth and death certificates (about £8 each, I think) for more details.

So if Banks was the fathers name.i presume the mothers name was either paine or related to kate.Edgar jones wife. Thank you for your kind help.

she could have got "Banks" from anywhere at all, but it wasn't uncommon for unmarried mothers to point their finger at the men responsible by giving their surname to the child.

The fact that no mother's name is given in the birth records usually means that if you buy a copy of the birth certificate you'll find that it's the name of the father that isn't there; the mother's name will be.

I'd recommend that if you want to find out who your great grandmother was. You can order one through this site

Some additional info:
In both the 1901 and 1911 censuses, Mary's birthplace is given as 'Herne Bay, Kent'. Blean is the Registration District that covers quite a wide area, including Herne Bay.

I can find that in 1901 , as a baby, she lived in Sturry which is just outside of Canterbury and is niece to the householder.

Yes prudie but Mary Paine parents are a mystery I know she lived with the Jones family.

Ancestry suggests her mother was Ada Mary Payne, 5 Nov 1873-1943

Unfortunately it says father unknown. Ada did have a late (and only recorded) marriage in 1922 to Henry Stallard but one can assume that wasn't Mary's father.
