anyone shed any light on the background of 'shangari la' which i have heard in a number of songs

Shangri La is used today as shorthand for a paradise or wonderful place. The name comes from an imaginary place in Tibet described in the novel 'Lost Horizon' by author James Hilton, a best seller in its day, although probably more people saw the movie of the book by Frank Capra.
