I think you'll find it was the Surfari's. Don't know whether that is spelt correctly but it was.

The Surfaris did indeed record the original version, quickly followed by practicaly every surf/ guitar/ garage band in the universe. No-one sang on it, though, as it's an instrumental. Or at least it was until the Fat Boys released a rap version in 1987 - with backing vocals from non other than the Beach Boys. No offence to the various Boys, but the original is still the best.
