It's Back......................

.............The Saddleworth Band Contest. A great event worth an evenings' time. We shall be there from the start at 4 pm in Greenfield, the Lancashire village that says it's in Yorkshire, since the boundary changes in 1974. If you've never been, and can get there, give it a go. There are lots of villages that have their own contests and the bands have to shuttle between each one, with a minimum of six, to have a chance of winning some tasty money. Greenfield is very popular with the bands. Some of the major ones always play there, ie, Faireys', Fodens, Brighouse, Black Dyke, Grimethorpe, etc, plus the occasional band from abroad. At the last event, there was a brass band from Australia. I'll see you there!

The bands marched through the village and turned into the area where they played their piece in the competition. This was outside the Liberal club. The chap who walked in front would stop for a drink, hours later he would wobble in front of the bands, great happy memories.
We should have gone to Greenfield today but our legs are not up to the task, lol.

Thanks for the replies folks. We had a great time but had to leave at 8 pm due a family emergency. Needs must.
Sparkly kid, the mounted police don't do that any more. They just have local stewards doing it. Lots and lots of people in attendance, Greenfield was absolutely packed. There was a great band from Norway called Chav Brass who had a fantastic reception. If you've never done the Whit Friday Band Contest before, then I'd recommend it, if you can get there. It's a fantastic event and a chance to see the top bands, all for free! The weather was great BTW. A really enjoyable evening. Thanks again folks.

Thanks, The Winner. Due to having to leave early, we didn't see Brighouse, Black Dyke or Faireys'. Brighouse always play Greenfield and always will as a tribute to an 8yr old boy who died in a freak accident with their coach a few years ago. I was a witness along with lots of other people, who, as you can imagine, were horrified. A friend who was with us was an off duty paramedic, but she couldn't save him. The boy slipped and fell under the bus, so the driver slammed his brakes on and turned the engine off, but it had air suspension which automatically lowers the body of the bus when the engine is turned off, and it crushed him. It was awful. Right in front of us. The buses no longer take that route for the competition. A really sad evening that was.
