With so much outrage about in cyberspace these days, let's look at one "before internet".

On this day in 1965, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison were invested with the MBE at Buckingham Palace.

Several OUTRAGED existing holders of MBE returned theirs in protest.

Canary; There's always been outrage, but before the internet it was confined to those who had telephones, or mates in the know. So the outrage wasn't widespread enough to infect nutters with knives or guns or smartphones.
no outrage before the internet?
shurely he means 'outtage' ? Thx to Bill Deeds of Private Eye

and some of the bay-attles returned THEIR MBEs later on

1966 Wilson says on tv good luck to the England squad - they win. Top of the Slops I think. My dear late Papa had apoplexy
NOT suitable things for a PM to do

all this whilst Bob Boothby ( Lord Boothby - liked young men better) had been bonking Dorothy MacM for 30 y. well what you dont see, you dont complain about I suppose
John Lennon was later so outraged himself that he returned his MBE.

Quote:
"Your Majesty,

"I am returning my MBE as a protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against ‘Cold Turkey’ slipping down the charts.

"With love. John Lennon of Bag".

Later on, George Harrison was outraged by only being offered an OBE when Paul McCartney had been given a knighthood, resulting in him refusing to accept the lesser award.
yerss yerss
that really is uptrading - I doan wanna OBE I am worf at least a 'C'

Evelyn Waugh turned down a CBE saying he shouldda been a Knight. Probably true. Mandarins ( the ones who choose and list silly!) have long memories and longer KNIIIIIIIVES !

For knighted doctors, their unadmiring colleagues ask: "which ministers bottom did you crawl up this year?" - you dont get one unless you are a govt axe-man.
Many many unrewarded disgruntled axe men

My papa's great fren' turned down a CBE - Arthur Crook, ed of the TLS. - I think he said he didnt deserve one

and my dears - there are lists of them
the great and noble who said - no no not me!
or I deserve more

One knight thanked me for NOT writing apost card - - "I know what you have done to get this !" - - - his words not mind

Respect to everyone who turned down an "honour", especially those with "Empire" in them.
Sound and fury signifying nothing.
.........................................It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
Macb act V

lots of sharp comments oon the Wiki page
especially those with "Empire" in them.
I think it is a turn of phrase - drained of its colonial significance by the context ( ooo how sausuuuurian!)

do you say, oh I cant go to Cambridge because it has "bridge" in it which I think is cruel to ducks, but Oxford is OK because that is a 'ford' and not a bridge. Altho I know Oxford has some bridges, very green they are.

or I cant to All Saints College because I dont believe in ONE let alone all of them.

you dont

OBE
The honours system has been anachronistic farce since long before the Beatles.
These are very important to some people
Leddies like being called ' Leddy'.
