could it be Yazoo? Alison Moyet placed an advert in MM for a "rootsy blues musician" and Vince Clarke replied, although this was in 1982.

God, there must have been hundreds! Even just in 1985 alone. Oddly enough, the one that immediately sprung to my mind was The Beloved. Probably not the most obvious answer... or necessarily correct. But I thought I'd mention it anyway.

official erasure website says they were formed in 1985 as a result of an advert by Vince Clarke - no mention of what publication advert was in though ?

Erasure I'm sure of, certainly in a music weekly, but not absolutely sure which one - NME, Sounds and MM were about then as far as I can remember, so I think you are safe to assume it was them.
