How long does it usualy take to become fairly good and quite quick on the guitar?

I started about 4 months ago for the first few weeks i didnt get anywhere then you start getting the hang of it if you can start by playing

sorry queens cray little thing called love its hard at the start but once you get a tune out of it picks you up a little. (im stuck in a rut at the moment and dont feel i can get any better) but keep at it good luck it dont happen over nite

im learning Voodoo chile by Jimi Hendrix at the moment and its tricky but i'll get there

Whatever takes you fancy to start with just try and stick to one song then you will pick everything up Trust me mine has hit the floor a few times we will get there in the end

I think part of the answer lies in the type of guitar you have. I've been playing a steel strung acoustic for a while and found things like barre chords pretty much impossible. I recently got an Ibanez electric guitar and I can now play chords that I had no hope of playing on the old one, because of the lower gauge strings and low action. If you can play and learn a few barre chords, then that it a good thing, because the advantage of them is, that it is easier to go up and down the neck as you can often use the same finger pattern, but on different frets to get a tune, without changing your finger shaping. This is part of the secret that people like jazz guitarists use, to fly up and down the fretboard and produce a recognisable tune, because the fingers frequently don' change the chord shape much.

It also depends on what kind of thing you want to play: you can learn basic chords in a few days/weeks which can form the basis of hundreds of songs. It takes a little more time and practice to get the hang of complicated riffs and solos. I've been playing for about 5 years and I still struggle with lots of stuff!

hi guys just to let you know my brother is a professional guitar player, been playing for about 30 yrs, played with the likes of the beatles in his younger days, anyway he still practises daily for about 3 hours, can play a bass like a lead he,s an amazing guitarist and as long as you put in the hours and dedication you,ll make a good guitarist just never think you don' t need to practise anymore
