There's always been sad music - but no-one usually comments on it. Do you think Viennese music critics mused about the state of Austrian kids after Mahler wrote Die Totenkindenlieder?
rugeley, I don't particularly like anthony and the johnsons but I think it's generally a bit of myth that certain types of music make teenages suicidal or depressed. True it does happen occasionally (think Columbine) but for example, my husband loves Marilyn Manson, Korn, etc and has done since his teens but he's a well-rounded man training to be a teacher. I happen to really like Joy Division, a band traditionally seen as depressing but I find some of Ian Curtis's lyrics really uplifting.
If you're going to generalise then you could also look at the effect dance music and culture has on kids taking E and LSD.
Still, it wouldn't do for us to all like the same thing!
