It started broacast in 1967. The Government had introduced the Marine Offences Act which meant that the majority of the 'pirate' stations, which were broadcast from ships moored outside territorial waters, were shut down. To try and fill the gap in the market, the BBC launched its own pop station with such go-ahead hep cat DJ's as Jimmy Young, Pete Murray an Terry Wogan.

It has adapted a bit since then, but is facing falling audiences. squeezed by the internet, commercial competition, and a general downturn in the importance of music in youth culture.

The very first DJ was Tony Blackburn and the first record played was Flowers in the rain by Move

Further to monroe's response, The Move missed out on the potential goldmine of royalties from that definitive pop-tastic moment. The original copiers of the single included a postcard showing a satirical image of the then Prime Minister harold Wilson. The PM took offence, sued, and won, and his settlement decreed that all future monies from the sale and airplay of the record go to charity - or is that 'charrideee' in Wunnerful Radio One-speak??
