In 1991 when producing this band formed by two brothers, he was having so much fun he ended up joining the band briefly as guitarist on their debut album a year later. what was the band?

Crowded House (formed by Neil and Tim Finn) brought out an album in 1991 called 'Woodface', though their 'debut' album was released a number of years earlier. However, their producer Mitchell Froom did indeed join the band as a musician shortly after they formed in the mid 80's.

Long shot, but that would be my guess.

It could be the flaming lips. The group was founded by Wayne Coyne with his brother Mark. Johnathon Donahue played guitar briefly and im sure he had some hand in producing. He left in 1991 to form Mercury Rev. The only fault with this is that the flaming lips debut album was in 1986.
