Is there an online index/catalogue of these anywhere? If I wanted to find out if a particular song were on a compilation album anywhere, how would I go about it?

If only.... if only.....

One of the things I'm going to do when I have the opportunity to be dictator of the entire world is to ban any album being entitled "The best of...." or "The very best of...."

If you put those opening words into a search engine you will probably pull out 90% of all compilation albums of single artists (especially if they have had a longish career).

The other option is to feed in "Various artists"

http://www.acerecords.co.uk/

They catalogue their stuff but mainly golden oldies, some blues and jazz

www.gracenote.com lists 293000 (ish) compilation albums just type various in the artist box.

Will take you a while to read through them all though!

go www.circuitcity.com

where it says search, type in the name of the song or artist. in the drag-down menu, choose movies & music. then click the go button.

if it asks you, select matches in music.

then it will list all artists, albums, and songs with that name.

(for practice use "satisfaction")

hope this helps.

Yeah ... it's called Google
www.discogs.com

Just search for artist name/track title & once found it will list any albums the artist/track has apperared on
