i woudl like to play a musical instrument not sure what . which would be the best to start on for a complete beginner

The main question here is - are you musical at all? If you can keep a beat and understand rhythm then something like the xylophone might be good to begin with, or how about the recorder, they start kids off in junior school with that so it must be fairly easy.
If you are up for a challenge then one of the most popular instruments is the guitar. You can start by plucking single strings then advance to strumming chords then put them together for simple songs. You don't need to be Carlos Santana to make it sound good, but it does take dedication - don't expect to pick it up and be knockin out Guns n Roses stuff by the end of the week.
