It's not a cse of music not having 'moved on', it's that the cultural worldwide impact created by the Beatles has never been repeated, and never will.
The 1960's were a time of massive change. A new generation with a massive amount of spending power came along, and spent massive amounts of money on pop music. Those days are long gone, and will never return because people's purchase of music relies on so many other media, a lot of which provide music for free.
I would suggest that music has never been as vibrant and varied as it is now, but that will neve be reflected in record sales because people's consumption, and more importantly their access to music, has changed out of all recognition from those early days. To use reduced album and single sales as a barometer of the popularity of music is a flawed argument. Music always has, and always will move on, and amen to that.
