I was wondering what the difference was between the Best Contemporary Song and Best Song Musically and Lyrically categories at the Ivor Novello Awards? Why would a song be nominated in the former category as opposed to the latter, and vice versa?

Music can be a very verified arena for competition, the categories are there to help distinquish between genre of entries; a song may be entered for the former category if it is deemed to be new, creative and distinctive in its compostition whereas some songs, while not be revolutionary in their musical composition or lyrical content, are still of a very high quality - this being so they may be entered for the latter categories of the Novello awards
