there were several versions ... Dusty Springfield .... Neil Diamond .... Terry Jacks ...... Vikki Carr ..... plenty more I think .......
I think the original was composed and sung in French by Jacques Brel, and was then translated into English. Terry Jacks (ex-Poppy Family) had a number 8 hit with his version in 1974; it was the follow-up to Seasons in the Sun.
