How do we work it out from that description? A xylophone track that's been played in the background on a few TV programmes and is quite long?

Could be Musica Poetica composed by Carl Orff & Gunild Keetman (used in the film Badlands) which was also "appropriated" by Hans Zimmer for the soundtrack to True Romance. That's got a xylophone on it.

The only xylophone tune I`ve heard on TV was Amazing Grace by Rolf Harris in an advert, back in the days when he was a painter and decorator

What about "Dead Already" by Thomas Newman, on the "American Beauty" soundtrack. Took me ages to track this one down myself !
