What are your thoughts on this regarding pets.
As I write it is like WW3 over at the back of my house and poor old Shaney is going bananas. In fact they were letting them off at around 10am this morning if you ever.
I have no objection to Bonfire Night or fireworks and am not a killjoy ....if it was just one night you can take the neccessary measures but when it goes on and on I despair.
And before any one says try desensitizing believe me I have tried ....my poor old boy is too old now for all that.

You think that you are being sensible by not taking them out for a walk on bonfire night, but the fireworks start weeks earlier.
Having said that I have not heard one this year.
Hope Shaney isn't too freaked this year, if he is getting on maybe he will lose his hearing (mines did) and problem solved!

Hi wolf63.. In spite of being an old lad his hearing is still as sharp as ever as the postman and dustman will no doubt testify !
It just drives me to distraction because some of the yobs round her start chucking them over the fences and it's now the time to go outside with him every night last thing just in case !
Here he is .... I seem to remember you posting you once had a GS lab cross.

my little darling, Robbie, looked more like a lab than a GSD. Shaney looks lovely, like a giant Mars bar.
Robbie was 5 when I got him and he was so scared of everything (apart from me) that he kept pulling his t**ticles up inside him. When we were alone he had them, then they were gone. The vet said it was a sign that life had not been good to him.
I had to muzzle him for the first couple of years and then we went onto the halti.
I have put a couple of pictures of him on my website. I miss him loads, but he was 14 when he died which was a good age. He was only ill for a couple of months.

I would love another dog. But for practical reasons will be getting another cat or two soon. It has been five months since my evil cat died - I miss him so much too.

Oh what a gorgeous boy !
Shaney was a dumped dog .We had a Norfolk terrier who lived to the ripe old age of seventeen and I swore no more dogs. Although had always had dogs ...However ...my neighbour who was a builder had these diddeycoy types throw Shaney out of their van into his yard and drive off. He had a tag with the name Shane and anyway he roamed around the yard for about three weeks until my neighbour asked me if I would take him in and I have never regretted it .He was about eighteen months old when I took him and he is one of the best dogs I have ever owned.

we are all proud parents. MY brother and his wife have two 'bald puppies' - Edie and Hamish, but I prefer the canine and feline 'child'.
After hearing Edie having a toddler tantrum the other day, and Hamish crying because he was teething I was even more sure of my decision never to have children. And that was just over the phone. Give me a little warm body to cuddle any day.

Luckily we haven't had any fireworks go off yet. I only hope this year we don't see any sick things in the paper this year. The early dark nights will be here shortly and I suppose that is when they will start. I will just have to be deafened by the tv so my two don't hear them. One problem I have is, I try to take them out about 6pm for their walk and I am alway terriified they will go off before we get home because they can't get home quick enough.
I personally think the same as many people..............they should be banned, many reasone why..................but the main reason for us is that we had and i say had as we lost him a yr ago as now,a beautifull gsd boy who was a little boy in a dogs body!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He was petrified of fireworks,no matter what we did,ie,ignored him, caged him, even took to a drive in the car as beleive it or not sometimes that worked!!!!!!
The end result was that we had to sedate him,for 8 yrs we did this,as we had his aunt and his sister,(who we still have),im afraid when one started they ALL started.
We also have birds in aviaries aswell so we have to leave the lights on and the radios up so they are not startled too much.I think if there is to be a display.............then councils should do them on grounds that are not too close to peoples houses etc, maybe in school grounds, playing fields etc.
I worry for all the cows/horses that are outside......as lets face it i cant see farmers taking thier stock in can you.
My only consolation.if it is one is that as the girl we have got now is 11 yrs old,her hearing is such that if she hears noises now she cant allways make out where it is coming from so as long as the curtains are closed and the tele is up and the radios also, then we should be ok..Regards

Hey everybody.I don't think any of you are alone in feeling this; most dog owners have that problem! It is so frustrating; not only are fireworks going off a good 4 weeks prior to November 5th, but I never know where and when they are coming from. ANY time between 11am and 2am the following day fireworks will be going off. And you'd be shocked (but not surprised, sadly) by the types of people who sell fireworks, and who they would sell them to.
We don't have our own outside space at the moment SO Jack needs regular walks out to pee etc, and a couple of good long walks a day. Hard to gauge when to do this when there's fireworks coming from the grass, the kerb, people'e exhausts, alleyways. I live in constant fear around this time of year!
Strangely enough, despite Jack's extreme nervousness, firework noises don't really upset him all ! Odd dog!
Hope all dogs and owners are OK. Lisa x
