I was at an Ex-Servicemen's club last night because ma nephew way playing in his band there. At the end there was an announcement by one of the members that the National Anthem would be played as usual. At the time, I was sitting at ma table and didn't stand. I was telt I had to stand and when I replied I didn't, I was asked to leave the hall whilst it was being played, which I did.

I object to the words of the Anthem as in the final verse it says,

"Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!"

Do you think I was correct or was it disrespectful?

I think it's fine not to stand for God save the Queen. It should be every man's choice to or not for exactly the sort of reasons you've stated Loon.If they would like the Irish/Scots/Welsh to stand for an anthem that denigrates their own home countries then they have unrealistic expectations. It wasn't disrespectful in my opinion, but people think because you are technically part of Britian you should be happy, accept that and go along with their daft wee tune.I think if I came up with an alternative national anthem with lyrics that involved killing a load of English not many of em would stand up, would they?Usually they can't see the irony of that though...
Disrespectful, as that verse was omitted when the tune/song was adopted as the National Anthem.
It would be disrespectful if you were English. As you are not then no I don't think it is
Of course it was disrespectful. Personally I reckon it's a cr@p anthem, but nevertheless, unfortunately,it's ours. If I was in another country,I would also stand for theirs if that was the done thing. Politeness,if not respect

Is it polite to speak of crushing rebellious Scots?
That particular verse has not been used for many, many years and anyone would consider it offensive to the Scots nowadays.

Shame you had to embarrass your nephew for a mealy minded principle, in an ex-servicemens club this remembrance weekend.

Question Author
Ethel why do you assume ma nephew was embarrassed? He did not want to stand either and went into a wee room by the side of the stage. As for it being Remembrance Weekend, I was one of the minority wearing ma Poppy.
Your argument about verse 6 doesn't hold - it has not been used in your or my lifetime. (I'm well past pension age).

I think you were just being a rebellious Scot.

:)
Quite right Ethel, they should all be taken to a scrap yard and put in the crusher.
coming from corby , corbyloon i assume that you are scottish like most of corby am i right?
gina - that's obvious from his style of posting.

If I spelt it my own dialect it would be incomprehensible to most people, so I do try to stick to standard spellings and usage.

Unlike thecorbyloon.
Going to an ex-servicemans club and not standing up for the National Anthem is a bit like me going to a mosque and not taking my shoes off -because I dont believe in it.
That is the last verse the whole national anthem goes like this 1. God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!

2. O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!

3. Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!
4. Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.

5. From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the King!
but the very last verse is usually sung only in Scotland and they always sing king
Fine but for that last verse. maybe made sense at one time, but I think anyone would agree, is now obsolete and is now to be deleted from the current version. I think this is a safe action without any embarasment of enquiring upon Her Maj. if appropiate so to do. (Acting in Her and Her subjects best interests without further direction)
The Scots run our parliament, even though you have your own,our Royal family is German/Greek,and everybody on telly, and radio is Scottish/Welsh/Asian or Afro/Carribean.
Us English bend over backwards to accomodate all races and religions. Its about time you lot had an operation to remove that huge chip on your collective shoulders.
We don't bear grudges against our former masters.....
Apart from the bloody Romans of course!
Get over it.
well said mWBA, Ive nothing against the Scots except the ones down here who've lived here for ages and still keep telling us how great it's up there
In corby im surprised anyone was standing at all,Corby used to be called "little Scotland" now I hear its called "little Poland"
is that the ex servicemans club near the steelworks on rockingham rd? my cousin took my there and other delightful corby venues when I was on leave from the gulf war and Northern Ireland, I was safer in west belfast ands the provo girls were prettier and more friendly
It's good to know that there are other people who refuse to stand for the National Anthem.

Why on earth should I be expected to stand for a tune which calls on a non-existent god to 'save' a monarch whom I refuse to acknowledge, which is played as the anthem of a nation I wish didn't exist. (I believe in a single Europe, with the abolition of the Westminster parliament and direct rule from Brussels).

I always stand for the European Anthem (Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy') but never for the National Anthem.

Chris

PS: I would probably have been even more unpopular than the CorbyLoon at an ex-serviceman's club on Remembrance Sunday. Although I'm happy to donate to the Royal British Legion (to support the work they do for the living), I believe that the dead are best forgotten. (I never attend funerals and I believe that the holding of funerals or memorial events should be made a criminal offence). In consequence of these views, I always refuse to wear a poppy.

Well done, CorbyLoon, for standing up (or should that be sitting down?) for your principles!
Question Author
Yes jl, that's the one. Not sure why you think Corby's bad, mind you while me and ma sister were watching the first part of the gig, ma nephew's brother was out walking not far far fae their house when he was attacked by a gang of 10.

Anyway, the Westminster Parliament is the Parliament of the UK not just England, so twhy should Scots not have the right to occupy the chief positions of government ?
Billy Connolly had the right of it... we should replace the national anthem with the theme tune from the Archers... much more jolly! :)
