ultravox-Vienna...what's it all about?

My BF says that Vienna by Ultravox is all about how the guy (singer) had an affair in Vienna, and to justify it to his partner wrote Vienna, with the words '...it means nothing to me, Oh! Vienna'. Is this true. If so, what a cr*p way to explain to your Partner!!! Is this true?

your right its a rubbish way of explaining but then there really isn't a good way to expain an affair whether it is communicated through the medium of song, dance, watercolour whatever.... :-(

Personally I don't think you can beat Cross Stich as a suitable medium. Perhaps a simple message, in the form of a cushion, or placemat perhaps, casually mentioning your latest indescretion!!!. I Hope she took him for all the royalties she could get!

How about a banner being towed behind a light aircraft - that would have a certain style. I always thought 'Vienna' was a song about Rigsby's cat (if you're under 35 I apologise for my outdated cultural reference points).

No apologies needed RCP......you see now the song is ruined for me, not that it was ever a particular favourite....perhaps I shouldn't have told anyone, then you could still believe it was about a cat....in the same vain, I still like to sing "we've got stars, they're eggs in our face" to the chorus of Robbie Williams' Millenium. (Not a robbie fan though)....I just had to add that. You have to have a high calibre of credibility/clique to post in the music section of Answerbank ;-)

What was most sad is that this great song never made number one. It was stopped from hitting the top spot by Joe Dolce's "Shaddup your face" of all songs!

Midge was asked in 1981 what the song was about and, for a laugh, talked about lost romances, art deco influences and all sorts of arty farty stuff.

reality is, Vienna isnt about anything in particular but the video does hint at certain themes. I too also think about Rigsby's cat but i can get over that...........
