Clapton wrote the song after hearing the legend of 'Layli and Madjnun', a famous eastern folk tale from the seventh century. His impassioned vocal pleadings are directed towards former sixties fasion model Patti Boyd who at the time was married to Clapton's best friend George Harrison. Miss Boyd eventually left George for Eric, and remarkably, the friendship between the two musicians survived the situation. Patti must be a special lady, having inspired Eric to write 'Layla' and 'Wonderful Tonight' about her, and George Harrison was equally inspired to write The Beatles' 'Something' about her effect on him.
