Non-Musician to Make Song Demo at Home

Hi there
I need some advice please.
I am a budding songwriter for the last 10 years and am now actively looking
to make demos of some of my creations. I am not a musician. I am looking for
some sort of a software device into which I can hum my melodies and get
these translated to musical melodies (different instruments), and then
combine this music with my singing of the lyrics.

Is there such a technology ? Please advise.

Hhhmm, the answer is a sort of....if you can even manage to play a keyboard with one finger and slowly tap out the melody then the is any amount of software packages that will help you in this regard (Cakewalk, Cubase, and many others) but i am not aware of any that have Voice recognition and pitch smapling capabilities......if you google for Future Music there is a magazine out there that might be able to help you more.....Failing all this why not try and find a song writing partner who you could colaberate (sp?) with and might be able to help you with some keyboard skills as well?

I recommend you get your hands on a subscription to Future Music magazine, you might not understand most of it at first, but eventually it will all come clear, that's how I learnt all about home recording systems, and all the equipment that comes with it...Future Music and my BF (who also went to the school of Future Music Magazine) ;-)

The only thing that would be similar would be to use SoundForge or something, (Audio recording software) once you have your recording of your melody idea, you would be able to pitch shift it and 'filter' it and make lots of weird and wonderful sounds with it, but it can't 'convert' it to other instruments or other sounding instruments.
