that a government that is so keen to stop you smoking, drinking, driving the type of vehicle you want, flying, control what you think and say etc etc, is so keen to get you to start gambling ?

I don't think gambling will actually be compulsory. But a very fair point.
No not at all it is just another way of reaping in more taxes.
If they really wanted people to give up smoking they would make it illegal, no they want that duty to keep coming in.
If they wanted to curb drinking, why introduce round the clock opening hours?
They are not bothered about what vehicle you drive they just want the chance to charge you more for the privilege.
The same goes as regards flying.
They may like to control what you say, but as yet they can't control what you think. At least I don't think they can, but wait a moment is that someone banging on my door?
Casinos need a licence to operate, a lot of it, and who will sell these licences ? Thereafter, betting-tax will pour billions into the same governmental coffers, especially
if they are super-casinos.

Socialism = cynicism
If you don't like supercasinos, don't gamble in 'em.

If everyone takes this line then the public mood will really be revealed...
