tremelo arm

why is the tremelo arm now being called a whammy bar?
when did this happen , and why by who?

I've certainly heard it called that for all the time I've played in bands so it must be at least 25 years (though I suspect longer)

Don't know who or why though beyond tremolo arm sounding a bit dull!
