If by "cross dresser" (sic) you are referring to the fact he wore womens outfits in his act then it should be crossdresser...all one word....of course maybe he was unhappy when he was getting attired....further to that the proper title whould be drag act......he was a Transvestite.

Anyway to answer the question.....The song was written by George A. Stevens in 1925 two years before Mr La Rue was born, so he no doubt grew up hearing it in Co. Cork where it quickly became a favourite Irish song done by many artists of the day.
