Noisy Guitar lessons

Our neighbours son gives lessons all afternoon and into the evening, with an electric guitar this makes it difficult to have our back windows open due to the noise. Does he have to be registered and can we do anything about it, as if we speak to him he just becomes abusive. Many thanks.

Anyone is free to offer music lessons without any form of registration. However, running a business from residential premises may require planning permission. I suggest speaking to someone in the planning department of your local council. (If it's not a 'unitary authority', you need to contact the district council, rather than the county council).

Your local council will also have an environmental officer with responsibility for noise pollution - could be worth asking them for advice. They will send a letter requiring him to desist and come and monitor the situation if it's bad enough.

It may sound to be a basic solution but have you tried speaking to your neighbour (and their son) to resolve the dispute - they may not realise there is a problem.

There may be no need to make the problem any worse than it actually is, perhaps by suggesting he tries taking students on who are keen to play acoustic guitar in the evenings, a much quieter way to spend the evenings I can assure you!
