kazaa problem

When I download a mp3 using kazaa lite and play it, halfway through the song it stops and noise is heard all the way to the end. This happens in 4 out of 5 songs I download, and it started happening a month ago (since then i've been using winmx) Can anyone help?

Hey Spax, now don't quote me on this one, but I think it's NOT a problem with your computer, or anything you're doing. I reckon it's bad versions of the files that are deliberately put onto peer-to-peer networks to stop you (illegally) downloading. I've had a few recently. And if the tracks you've been downloading are particularly well-known and modern, then this is likely to be the answer. I've found that there are thousands of these "bad" copies of tracks by artists like Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears, but no bad copies of less well-known tracks or older tracks. Just keep downloading different versions of that song until you find a good copy. *COUGH*or buy it*COUGH*.

i don't really think that's it becouse I always download songs that have the most user count (so a lot of people have them) and they all have the same bad copy? how's that possible?

Indiesinger is right in my opinion. Try downloading Bee Gees tracks and many of them are corrupted. A lot of users copy them and dont play them back. They just file them. That means another corrupted track is there as well.The bad tracks spread daily. Its a pain but they must be played from start to finish to check, cos sometimes the noise is only a few seconds long. I burnt an album to Cdr and then realised the mistake in not checking.

Its quite easy to spot these very deliberatley corrupted files. They are often all too easy to download. A recent example, a search for "the boys of summer" by the ataris, yields several results, all of which have high user counts and bandwith, but come down corrupted. Try using the "rating" facility on your files, and encourage other users to do likewise, as this acts as a good guide. Also, when you download files, have a listen to them all the way through, as soon as possible, and if you get a file like this, delete it straight away. I am sure it must be possible for record companies to set up kazaa nodes with high speed connections that look like multi users - though they refuse to comment. The next question is, if a virus comes in this file - is it the downloaders fault? What if record companies on a sly offensive?

IndieSinger and Robber 1 are absolutely right. If I download a fake, I always delete it straightaway, but a lot of peole just leave them, making it look like it's a good file because so many users have it. Check the duration of the track you're downloading to see if it looks abnormally long or short. If you know it's only a 4 minute song but the duration is 7 minutes, and it's not a remix, it might be a fake. Most real files, but not all, will have track numbers at the beginning, which tends to mean they've been burned from a cd, rather than fakes put out by record companies. I also try to look for good quality files that just 2 or 3 users have, as they tend to be real (I realise not everyone has broadband though, so that may be too slow for some). All the WMA's I've downloaded have been real, if you don't necessarily need MP3's. Lastly, most of my fakes have had file names that are perfectly written out, for instance, I would go for '03 time is running out.mp3' rather than 'Time Is Running Out - Muse.mp3. These are just little tricks that have worked for me and might work for others. God I've rambled....

I have had the same problem on a number of occasions.One thing I did notice though,is that many of the dodgy tracks I downloaded had a number of 1111111's in front of the track name.I dont know if this means anything,or if it is just coincidental,but I now make sure that I do not download anything that has a load of 111111's in the title,and I have not had a dodgy music download for ages.

Agree with all the above, but just to add these tend to be promo versions which is the old days used to be the full track but the record companies are now putting in white noise so that they can be listened too to review the record but not play it commercially or release onto Kazaa etc.

Good point simonc. I have broadband and I know its supposed to be quick, but hey!! the corrupted tracks download like lightening. So fast that its noticeable.
