I am interested in song lyrics that convey contempt, anger, bitterness, disdain etc towards another person. My favourite example is 'I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes.........you'd know what a drag it is to see you' from Positively 4th Street, Bob Dylan. Does anybody have any other examples?

"Dreams Of An Everyday Housewife", as recorded by Glen Campbell (I forget who actually wrote it).
Every Breath You Take - The Police....always made me smile when people asked for this as a love song when I was DJ'ing, as it's actually all about Sting's split and divorce from his first wife.

One by U2 is also often treated as a love song when it is actually a bitter song - "I can't keep holding on to what you've got, when all you got is hurt" or "we hurt each other and we'll do it again"
John Lennons (not very) thinly veiled attack on Macca "How do you sleep?" seems to cover: contempt, anger, bitterness, disdain etc pretty damm thoroughly!
"Tainted love" by Gloria jones or soft cell's later version.
The Jam's Mr Clean. "Daylights dawns, you wake up and yawn - Mr. Clean. A piece of toast from the one you love most - and you leave You get the bus in the 8 o'clock rush, And catch the train in the morning rain Mr. Clean - Mr. Clean If you see me in the street - look away Cause I don't ever want to catch you looking at me - Mr. Clean Cause I hate you and your wife And if I get the chance I'll fcuk up your life Mr. Clean - etc. - IS THAT SEEN! Surround yourself with dreams, of pretty young girls, and anyone you want, but - please don't forget me or any of my kind cause I'll make you think again When I stick your face in the grind - Getting p*ssed at the annual office do - Smart blue suit and you went to Cambridge too - You miss page 3, but the Times is right for you - And mum and dad are very proud of you - Mr. Clean - etc. "
It's not a great song but Ugly Kid Joe's 'Everything About You' is a pretty comprehensive character assassination. Alanis Morrisettes '..And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it....well can you feel it?' from 'You Oughta Know' is good. Eminem's 'Cleaning Out My Closet' is rather vicious. Bob Dylan's 'Masters of War' is my ultimate though; the last verse goes 'And I hope that you die And your death'll come soon I will follow your casket In the pale afternoon And I'll watch while you're lowered Down to your deathbed And I'll stand o'er your grave 'Til I'm sure that you're dead' even Bob now thinks he was being a bit harsh!
How about "The Stone Roses" I am the ressurrection? Down down you bring me down I hear you knocking down my door And I can't sleep at night Your face it has no place No room for you inside my house I need to be alone Don't waste your words I don't need Anything from you I don't care where you've been or What you plan to do Turn turn I wish you'd learn There's a time and place for everything I've got to get it through Cut loose 'cause you're no use I couldn't stand another Second in your company Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you I don't care where you've been or What you plan to do Stone me why can't you see You're a no one nowhere washed up baby Who'd look better dead Your tongue is far too long I don't like the way it sucks and Slurs upon my every word Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you I don't care where you've been or What you plan to do I am the resurrection and I am the life I couldn't ever bring myself To hate you as I'd like I am the resurrection and I am the life I couldn't ever bring myself To hate you as I'd like OR "Comeg" Spine I pray from afar that you'd lose your head when you crash your car That would be so fine, then she'd be mine and could you break your spine, the way you tried to break mine. I dream of your last breath, when the pain grows more and your life means less that would make me laugh when they find your bath and laying on your bed is a note that said I've been good and what do you know she's been so bad that I had to let go they made me let go but you wouldn't understand, how could you understand you're just a man.
Kags, that particular line is one of my favourites - but for an entirely different reason... just how big are Bob Dylan's shoes for someone to stand INSIDE them?? Makes me wince every time I hear it, for an allegedly good poet that's a lousy line!
"Colarado Beetle" by the inexplicably under-rated Bluetones - " I shan't close my eyes tonight/ I'm gonna look at you instead/ And when, at last you sleep my love/ I'm gonna smash your lying head" and "Everything you touch you tarnish, everything you've broken was mine". Also an excellent line in "The Cabbage" by Teenage Fanclub - "Asked you for nothing, and that's what I got". Will look into this further for you....
Kelis - Caught Out There, because you get to shout "I hate you so much right now" really loudly!! Cathartic stuff!!
Sorry just thought of another one so full of disdain "i don't feel sad about letting you go, I just feel sad about letting you know", New England by Billy Bragg/Kirsty Macoll, he really spits the words out as he sings them!!
There is another Stone Roses song, Elizabeth My Dear. "Tear Me apart and boil My bones, I won't rest til She's lost Her throne, My aim is true my message is clear, It's curtains for You Elizabeth My Dear" Can't think who they were singing about.
1) Another Stone Roses song, also called How do You Sleep (from Second Coming) 2) 'Mistakes and Regrets' by ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, featuring the fantastic opening line "If I could make a list/Of my mistakes and regrets/I'd put your name on top/And every line after it."
'Mercenary' by The Mission, allegedly written about some road crew members who deserted the band for a rival. This site won't let me reprint the lyrics as they contain 'profanities.' They can be found at http://www.lyricsdir.com/m/mission-uk/mercenary.ph
