5.1 Surround DVD help wanted please

Hi there

We've just bought a DVD player with 5.1 surround speakers.

The LCD TV we're going to hook it up to has a pretty rubbish tinny sound.

We're hoping therefore that we can use the speakers to enhance the sound from the TV and not just when we're playing DVDs (we're not bothered about 'genuine surround sound' just an improvement on the standard sound).

We have a standard sky box which is going into the TV so I wondered if the best way to get good sound from the TV was to route the SKY through the DVD player (which would be all connected up to the new speakers of course!)

Any help would be very welcome

you will have 2 buy an amplifier first
the dvd player does not have one inside
to run them, you can hook the sky speaker outlet to the amp also
you be better off buy an all in one surround sound system
there pretty inexpensive and good looking too now

I would suspect that if the speakers came with your player it probably does have a built-in amp. If it does and if it also has sound inputs (probably red/white phono sockets) and your Sky box has sound outputs (ditto) - on Virgin, so I don't know what outputs Sky provide - then connect the 2 with a suitable lead. You'll probably need the player on and also to select the external sound source (ie your Sky box).

I was kind of assuming that the sub-woofer had an amplifier since it plugs in seperately to the electricity supply and the 5 smaller speakers seem to run off the sub-woofer?
