dog has caught one of his claws

my dog has caught one of his claws whilst running,its the back one on the inside,its a bit warm but i wasnt sure wether to take him to the vets?he seems ok in himself but is still limping and this was on sunday that he did it?should i take him as it drew bllod as i dont want it to be infected? help pls xx

happened on sunday and still limping 2 days later? I'd take hin to the vets in the morning, it really is better to be safe than sorry and it's obviously still causing him pain.

Nails are very painful, so there is probably no need to worry, although if it is swollen at all the vet will give him some antibiotics in case of any infection. One of mine did this last week and he limped for about four days. No medication given, and he was back to normal(?) in no time.

Possibly depends a bit on what type of breed. I have had Whippet since Feb - never had them before. She has had to have her rear dew claws removed, and one of her front nails.
She is very fast and very fragile.
Other breeds are much more substantial and do not get this problem, and they are just a bit sore for a few days.

I had a GSD tear his front dew claw, and it had to be removed under anaesthetic. I have had two small dogs completely rip out front claws and were only lame for a few days, and one eventually grew back, the other only happened last week so although he is now sound again the nail hasn't yet grown.

thanks guys,i havent taken him to the vet yet,he was fine when i got home,jumping round the garden and bringing me flower pots complete with earth in to my house!he has the odd moment when he limps slightly but otherwise fine.the claw looks to be healing and its not loose.he flinches a little if i have a look at it but i would expect that.i will keep an eye on it and if i see any changes to it or it becomes hot or swollen ill take him to the vets right away.hes a miniature pinscher and hes a bit of a wuss when he does the slightest thing anyway! thanks anyway for advice xxxx

yes sounds like a dew claw. My little dachy does this a lot when he skids around. Best to always kep this nail short. Normally the nail falls off after about a week if he's pulled it lose. It's a bit painful if they catch like it would be for us but it usually comes right by itself.
