Swansea - NYC connection

I live in Swansea, South Wales and just visited the Wikipedia page for my home city. Near the bottom it lists the "twinned" cities, and it states that Swansea has some sort of "friendship" with New York City, USA. This really surprised me but there's no more info on the subject. Does anyone out there know the source of this friendship as I'd really like to know more?

could your council provide details? Maybe it relates to the time Europeans emigrated en masse to the States - did liners used to leave from anywhere round Swansea? (Just a guess.)
