Although most Beatles fans would be certain that the Mop Tops hit the Number One spot first, it was in fact Gerry And The Pacemakers who achieved that feat on 14 March 1963 with 'How Do You Do It', with The Beatles close behind with 'From Me To You' on 18 April 1963. The Pacemakers were second of the Merseybeat bands to make the charts, but the first to Number One, and the first group ever to reach Number One with each of their first three releases.
The Beatles were given first choice for How do you do but turned it down for a Lennon- Mc Cartney song. The pacemakers ( the band members are now wearing them) did beat them to number one only to be kicked out my the Lennon- McCartney song Please, Please me
